Spook-tacular treats!

When Halloween was coming, I started to think about what treats I could make for our Family night. When you look on the internet for inspiration there are so many cakes, fruity treats and savoury treats that look fun to make. Some of the favourites I found were pretzel webs, orange rice crispie pumpkins, banana 'mummies' and these strawberry ghosts and apple monsters. I've always wanted to try making some fun fruit snacks and Halloween is a perfect time to do that.
As I've mentioned before, on the last Saturday of the month all the family come around. As it lay on the 28th, we thought perfect! we can have a halloween-y party. We had some colourful decorations, fancy dress and some halloween inspired food - pumpkin houmous with 'carrot fingers', veggie mince spaghetti bolognese and these two fruity delights. Typically when I think of halloween, I think of an overload of sweets. Therefore, these snacks are ideal because they are slightly healthier, yet still tasty and spook-tacular. They were both easy to make, and they worked well and looked very effective.
Here's how they're made:
Apple Monsters
Ingredients:
2 apples - I used 1 green and 1 red (this makes 16 monsters)
2/3 cup, plus 4 teaspoons peanut butter spread or any other spread
Puffed rice cereal (GF is available)
8 red grapes, each sliced vertically in half
16 green grapes
32 chocolate chips
Method:
1. Quarter and core the apple, then quarter each piece again, so you have 16 thin wedges.
2. Spread 1 teaspoon PB on each apple slice.
3. Lay half of the apple slices on top of the other halves, (matching up the PB sides so the apple slices stick together) to create the 'mouth'.
4. Push puffed rice 'teeth' gently into the butter, all around the 'mouth', leaving room to place a red grape 'tongue' on the bottom slice of each 'mouth'.
5. Place one red grape half in the centre of each bottom slice to create the 'tongue'.
6. To create the 'eyes', slice the ends off the green grapes, then cut each grape in half horizontally. Using the tip of the knife, make a small slit in the top of each grape half, then place a chocolate chip, pointy-end down into the grape, pushing the point of the chocolate chip into the slit you cut.
7. Place two small dollops of PB on the top portion of each 'mouth', then gently press a grape 'eye' onto each dollop.
8. Enjoy immediately, or store in the refrigerator for an hour or two before serving.
Strawberry Ghosts
Ingredients:
Around 30 fresh strawberries
200g white chocolate
1/8 teaspoon almond extract
50g milk chocolate chips
Method:
1. Wash strawberries and gently pat with paper towels until completely dry. Melt white chocolate and stir until smooth. Stir in extract.
2. Dip strawberries in chocolate mixture, place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet, allowing excess chocolate to form the ghosts' tails.
3. Immediately press chocolate chips into coating for eyes. Freeze for 5 minutes.
4. Melt remaining chocolate chips, stir until smooth. Dip a toothpick into melted chocolate and draw a mouth on each face. Refrigerate.
How easy are they to make!? Everyone enjoyed a spooky munch after dinner. Feel free to try them out - there's still time!
Have a look at the spook-tacular photos below. Scott's mum made the pumpkins and carrot fingers - how cool are they!?
I'm going to have a go at making homemade gnocchi so watch this space.
